Sixth Sunday in Eastertide

                                                        Memorial Day Weekend

WORSHIP SERVICE                       Sunday, May 28, 2006                               10:00 A.M.

PRAYER TIME BEFORE WORSHIP: Holy One, it is our joy and privilege to gather in your presence this morning as your sons and daughters. Continue to mold and shape us individually and as a community of faith. Help us to become like tall “trees that are planted by streams of water, which yield their fruit in its season, and their leaves do not wither.” Give us the word that we need to hear this morning. Send your Spirit among us and hear the prayers that we offer, for we pray in the strong name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

UNISON CONFESSION

Some of the most frightening words that your Son spoke were the words, “Not everyone who says to me ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only

the one who does the will of my Father in heaven.” O God, you know all our motives, our thoughts, the things that drive us. You know how easily we spin the truth. We are people who are adept at keeping appearances. We have learned to carefully choose words, lest we offend anyone. You want from us authenticity, a clear ‘yes’ or ‘no’, transparency, single-minded devotion to Christ and his kingdom, an incorruptible spirit, integrity from the inside out. May you never have to say to us, “I never knew you, go away from me…” for we desire more than anything else to abide in your presence and do the things that accomplish your will. Forgive us, renew us and send us forth full of Spirit. Amen.

SILENT CONFESSION & DECLARATION OF PARDON

Leader:               Almighty God forgives and pardons sin. He sent his Son to be the sacrifice

for the sins of the world. Jesus Christ was the Righteous One, making

atonement for the unrighteous. In him we are forgiven. Amen.

ANTHEM                              “O Lord, You Know Me Completely”                           Hopson

                                                                 Women’s Choir

Refrain: O Lord, you know me completely, You know my sleeping; you know my waking.  You know my every thought .  You are acquainted with the secrets of my heart.

I know that your love will be with me;  it goes behind me, before me.  If I would climb to the tallest peak, or wander through the valley your hand will guide my way; your hand will hold me fast.  (refrain).

I know that your love will go with me; it goes behind me, before me.  If I should walk through the darkest night, your light will shine around me, Your hand will guide my way, your hand will hold me fast.  (refrain).

*UNISON CREED AND GLORIA PATRI                                                          No. 579

In the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus, God kept his promises. All that we can ever hope for was present in Christ. But the word of God in Christ is not over. God calls us to hope for more than we have yet seen. The hope God gives us is ultimate confidence that supports us when lesser hopes fail us. In Christ God gives hope for a new heaven and earth, certainty of victory over death, assurance of mercy and judgment beyond death. This hope gives us courage for the present struggle. In Christ God gave us a glimpse of the new creation he has already begun and will surely finish.                                                 A Declaration of Faith, 1977

DEAR NORTHMONT CONGREGATION, don’t forget, next Sunday, June 4th is Pentecost Sunday, the Birthday of the Church.  It is when we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit to the faithful, approximately 50 days after Easter.  The paraments in the chancel will be red, and we are asking everyone in the congregation to wear red, also. The Chancel Choir will sing a special Pentecost anthem, and the Northmont Pentecost Band will play, too.  In addition, it will be Communion Sunday.  Let’s all turn out at 10:00 A.M., wear red,  and celebrate the Holy Spirit at Northmont!

THE PENTECOST BAND will rehearse next Sunday morning at 9:00 A.M. in the sanctuary. Please bring your instruments, music and music stands, (if you have one), and be sure to wear RED!!!!

ALL CHURCH PICNIC: Mark your calendar for the all church Picnic on Sunday, June 4th, Devlin Park, 12:30 P.M. Grilled hamburgers and hotdogs, condiments and cold drinks provided. Sponsored by the Christian Education Committee. Hope to see you there!!!

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL/JUNIOR CAMP REGISTRATION AVAILABLE!  If you have a mailbox at the church, your registration materials are waiting for you in your box. If not, forms are available on the table at the rear of the sanctuary, at the information center, and in the church office. If you have questions, see or call  Frank Stricklen or email him at (frankstricklen@northmontchurch.org). Deadline to register is June 15.

NORTH HILLS YOUTH MINISTRY COUNSELING CENTER BOOK SALE: Will be held on Monday June 5 – Saturday, June 10th 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM. at Northway Mall. Over 50,000 books sorted into 35 categories. Proceeds go to support the professional counseling, parent education and prevention programs, and tutoring services for individuals, children, teens and families. This year Judith Shifrin is welcoming us to her lovely home for the Presbyterian Women’s Birthday Picnic.  Her residence is easy to get to:  Just take Ingomar Road (the Brandt School Road part) up past Ingomar Methodist Church.  Just after the church, turn left onto West Ingomar Road, go 4 blocks and make another left onto Nevin, right onto Dalton and it will be the 4th house on the left.  Dr. Antonson will lead our service in the beauty of God’s great outdoors and Bill Goff will provide the music as we dedicate the Birthday Offering collected on June 4.  Bring a friend if you like—this is a great way to start the summer.

THE PLAY “FOOLS”, a comic fable by Neil Simon, will be performed twice at Hosack School at 7:30 P.M. on June 2nd and 3rd. It is produced by Paragon Studios and directed by church member Debbie Lofreddi.
