Pentecost Sunday
Holy Communion/Teacher Appreciation
PRAYER TIME BEFORE WORSHIP: We want and need, O God, the same Spirit that blew upon the waters back in creation, parted the waters of the Red Sea and raised your Son Jesus from death to life. We await the invasive force of the Wind that has sent believers out to serve you and has turned our upside-down world, or rather right-side up. That Wind that proceeds from you and from the crucified-risen son is the Wind that we want to address, summon and freshly empower us. May new worlds be birthed by the Wind marked by compassion, joy, justice, mercy and the fruits of the Spirit. Newness-generating Wind, come blow on us and your church wherever it gathers this day. Amen.

PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP
CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: Jesus said, “I will ask the Father, and he will send you a Counselor to take my place, to be with you forever.”
Community: The Spirit of Truth, will come, to live with you and be with you.
Leader: The Counselor, the Holy Spirit will teach you all things and remind you of everything that I have said to you.
Community: The Spirit will convict the world of sin, its need of a Savior, and make the Church fruitful.
All: Come Holy Spirit, Wind of God, Holy Fire, Power on High!
*HYMN “On Pentecost They Gathered” No. 128
*UNISON PRAYER OF ADORATION AND INVOCATION
Leader: The word of the Lord.
Community: Thanks be to God.
UNISON CONFESSION
O God, whose Spirit is always bringing new life to your people and sending your church off in new directions with daring visions, we confess this morning that we
-2-
prefer things as they are. Some of us resist the wind, for we have our world organized as we wish it. Forgive us when we make Pentecost a celebration of
something that happened 2,000 years ago in an upper room in Jerusalem, and fail to see how the Spirit can transform us right now. Your Spirit came that first Pentecost as fire and wind – fire to reignite the hearts of your people and wind to blow the doors off the church and send believers into new and untested waters. If the embers of our faith burn low, reignite. If our enthusiasm for your work has diminished, reinvigorate. If our sails are slack, fill them with the wind of the Spirit. Amen.
SILENT CONFESSION & DECLARATION OF PARDON
Leader: Do not cast us away from your presence, O God, and do not take your
Spirit from us. Sustain us with your willing and generous Spirit.
Community: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. As we turn Godward, the Spirit is
there to restore, sustain and deliver us. Amen.

We trust in God the Holy Spirit, everywhere the giver and renewer of life. The Spirit justifies us by grace through faith, sets us free to accept ourselves and to love God and neighbor, binds us together with all believers in the one body of Christ, the church. The same spirit, who inspired the prophets and apostles, rules our faith and life in Christ through Scripture, engages us through the Word proclaimed, claims us in the waters of baptism, feeds us with the bread of life and the cup of salvation. The Spirit…gives us courage to pray with out ceasing, to witness to all peoples to Christ as Savior and Lord…and to work with others for justice, freedom and peace. A Brief Statement of Faith, 1977

TODAY IS THE DAY OF PENTECOST, the birthday of the church. Quite simply, this is the day when the church became The Church. This is the day when the fire Holy Spirit, (represented often by a white dove), descended upon the faithful. People spoke in tongues, and flames of the spirit were seen over the heads of the disciples. The liturgical color you see on the chancel is red, and many of us are wearing red today.
WE ARE RECEIVING the special Birthday Offering today that under the girds the work of Presbyterian Women around the world. Since 1912 when this offering began, collecting pennies, $29 million has been received. Five projects will receive funds this year: Forman Christian in Lahore, Pakistan, Kentucky Refugee Ministries, Inc. in Louisville, KY, the River in Johnson City, TN, Rose Advocates-Maple Tree house in Weiser, Idaho, and Single Parent Resource Center, Inc. in NYC.
