Sixth Sunday in Pentecost/Father’s Day

WORSHIP SERVICE       __    Sunday, June 19, 2005                                    10:00 A.M.

PRAYER TIME BEFORE WORSHIP: Holy God, your Son Jesus Christ had tough words to say to the people of his day and tough words to say to us. He said, “Whoever loves their son or daughter more than me, is not worthy of me; and whoever does not take up the cross and follow me is not worthy of me.” You want our complete attention, our deepest devotion, lives that are centered in you. Everything else in life is to be secondary to your kingdom and reign. May it be that our lives this very day reflect your order and purpose, that we love you with all our heart, soul, mind and strength, through Jesus Christ. Amen.

UNISON CONFESSION

We are mindful, O God, of not only the things we have done but also those things we have failed to do. We could have visited that lonely person on our street, but we used our time for something else. There was a terrible injustice done at work, but we were silent. We heard racist comments, and they went unchallenged. Someone did something wonderful and unexpected for us, but we forgot to say thanks. We heard someone attack a friend’s reputation, and we looked the other way. We listened to something that we know was not true, and did not even try to correct it. Forgive, O God, our sins of omission, which are many. Give us strength and courage to stand for what is right, honest and truthful that justice and righteousness and a sense of integrity may mark our life, through Jesus Christ. Amen.

SILENT CONFESSION & DECLARATION OF PARDON

Leader:               The death that Jesus died, he died to sin, for all, but the life he lives, he

lives to God. You are no longer under the tyranny of death, but the

freedom of life in Christ Jesus. In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. Amen!

*CREED AND GLORIA PATRI                                                                             No. 579

In forming his people and sending them into the world, Jesus called individuals to be disciples. They were to share the joy of his companionship, to understand and obey his teachings, and to follow him in life and death. We confess that Christians today are called to discipleship. Life shared with Christ and shaped by Christ is God’s underserved gift to each of us. It is also God’s demand upon every one of us,

never perfectly fulfilled by any of us. Forgiven by God and supported by brothers and sisters, we strive to become more faithful and effective in our daily practice of the Christian life.                       A Declaration of Faith, 1977

He and his wife Nancy live in Ross Township.

WE ARE RECEIVING the Father’s Day special offering this morning that supports Northside Common Ministries. In the last year NSCM assisted 480 homeless men to find shelter, to access clothing, meals, toiletries and medical attention. They also served 12,912 low-income individuals. Roughly 50% of their work is with very low-income families and children and 40% are with frail elderly or disabled individuals. The need is great!

THE SPIRITUALITY AND PRAYER GROUP will not be meeting during Frank’s vacation. The group will resume their studies on June 30.

WHEN WE PURCHASED OUR NEW HYMNAL, Sing the Faith, I was delighted to see the hymn “A Mother Lined a Basket”, no. 2189, was included.  I first saw this piece at a reading session at the Westminster Conference on Worship and Music several years ago.  The words were touching. I bought the anthem for the choir and we sang it at Christmastime recently.  The text is wonderful, in that it reminds us that our children are only on loan for us for a time, and that, in the end, the most difficult part of loving is letting them go.  To better understand the hymn, (and the roles of Jochebed and Hannah), please read the Biblical references, (Exodus and Samuel), listed at the bottom of the hymn.  (C. William Goff).

Don’t miss AROUND THE WORLD IN 5 DAYS !!!  Applications for our Junior Camp (August 1-6) were mailed out to most of your homes this week but if you need one, please see Frank Stricklen after worship or contact the church office.  This camp is the perfect way to introduce children ages 3-8 to the variety of people, foods, music, customs and cultures around the world and the types of mission projects our denomination supports across the globe. Don’t miss it!

We still need a number of adult and teen helpers for Junior Camp. Many positions have been filled but we still need helpers, teen counselors, work crew members and at least one more teacher. If you’d like to help, see Frank Stricklen or call the church office. Applications for teen volunteer positions are available from Frank or in the church office.
