Third Sunday in Pentecost
PRAYER TIME BEFORE WORSHIP: Your desire, O God, is that we should set our hope in you and not forget your mighty works on our behalf. You desire in us a tender and trusting spirit, a child-like faith, that we might set our minds on you. We praise you for the incredible miracle of life, that we were made free and responsible and we are upheld by a love we often spurn. We bless you that there is healing for our hurts, comfort for our sorrows, light for our darkness and pardon for our sins. Come, Spirit of God, and speak to each of us this morning, through Jesus Christ. Amen.
PRELUDE “The God of Abraham Praise” arr. Burkhardt
“I Danced in the Morning” arr. Diemer
“The King of Love My Shepherd Is” arr. Diemer
WELCOME, CONCERNS, AND GREETINGS
PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP
CALL TO WORSHIP (Psalm 91)
Leader: You who live in the shelter of the Most High, who abide in the shadow of the Almighty, will say to the Lord,
Community: “My refuge and my fortress; my God, in whom I trust.”
Leader: For he will command his angels concerning you.
Community: To guard you in all your ways.
Leader: Those who love me, I will deliver; I will protect those who know my name.
Community: When they call to me, I will answer them.
All: I will be with them in trouble, I will rescue them and honor them and show them my salvation.
HYMN SING (seated) “I Danced in the Morning” (vs. 1 and 4) No. 302
“How Great Thou Art” (vs. 1, 2, and 4) No. 467
“When Morning Gilds the Skies” (vs. 1 and 2) No. 487
*UNISON PRAYER OF ADORATION AND INVOCATION
Leader: The word of the Lord.
Community: Thanks be to God.

UNISON CONFESSION
To look at us, dear Lord, it would appear that our grip on life is firm, that we are managing well and that we have come to terms with the fears and frustrations that have haunted people since the story started. Yet in our own eyes, as in your sight, we are not the masters of our fate that we pretend to be. We are anxious about the well-being of loved ones, our children, our jobs, our health, the number and power of our sins. In a candor qualified by mercy, show us again the connection between our anxious minds and our lack of faith. Forgive our sins. Enlarge our trust that, fearing nothing but our loss of you, we may take what comes as those who have seen the end and know that it is good, and master the secret of the carefree life, to the praise of your strong name. Amen. A prayer by Ernest T. Campbell
SILENT CONFESSION & DECLARATION OF PARDON
Leader: Hear the good news! The saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance, that
Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. He himself bore our sins
in his body on the cross, that we might be dead to sin, and alive to all that
is good.
Community: In the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Amen.

The church’s story with God did not end with the latest events recorded in Scripture. Across the centuries the company of believers has continued its pilgrimage with the Lord of history. It is a record of faith and faithlessness, glory and shame, worry and assurance. The church has been persecuted by hostile societies, but it has also known times of privilege and power when it joined forces with dominant cultures. It has sought holiness through separation from society, as well as through involvement in the world’s affairs. It has experienced life-giving reformations. It has also known missionary expansion throughout the world, but also periods of dwindling resources and influence. We confess we are heirs of this whole story…Now is the time of our testing, as God’s story with the church moves forward through us. We are called now as God’s servants in the service of people everywhere. A Declaration of Faith, 1977

A CONGREGATION-WIDE mailing went out announcing the need for a one-time gift to complete the work on our church kitchen. In February of 2001 we launched a capital campaign that has made major improvements to our church facilities including the new tower entrance, air conditioning in the sanctuary and Polley Fellowship Hall, soundproof partitions in Polley Fellowship Hall and more. The last project to be addressed is the kitchen. With bids totaling $140,422 and with $104,000 in hand, we want to make up the difference and complete the work over the summer. We know this can be done. Session met June 11th in a special meeting to approve the fund drive. We are grateful to Don Tanner and his ten-person committee who have worked tirelessly to put the plan in place. Other groups who use the kitchen are being asked to give as well. Please earmark your check on the memo line, “capital projects.” Shortly you may want to stop by and see the work underway!
I GET BY WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM MY FRIENDS…remember the Beatles song? We all need a concerned caring friend at difficult times in our lives. A Stephen Minister can listen and care for you or someone you know who is going through a tough time.
SUNDAY GREETERS NEEDED!! The Deacons are asking members of the congregation to sign-up to be a Sunday morning greeter during the summer at 10:00 A.M. This is a great way to give some time to your church and meet and greet other church members and visitors. It only takes a few minutes before the service! Please fill out the form below and place it in the offering plate and a Deacon will contact you to schedule your date to greet.
