Thirteenth Sunday in Pentecost

WORSHIP SERVICE               Sunday, August 27, 2006                10:00 A.M.

PRAYER TIME BEFORE WORSHIP: Often O God, we have stormed the gates of heaven with some 11th hour need, we were desperate and you heard us. At other times in the quiet of worship or when we were alone, we made our needs known to you and you heard us. Whatever our mood or situation at the moment, your ears are always open to our cry. Thank you that you care, you hold us close, you are more anxious to bless and take action that we are to believe it to be true. Come near to each of us this morning. Speak the word that we need to hear. Overcome our doubts and hesitation. Be closer than our breath, through Jesus Christ. Amen.

UNISON CONFESSION

One of the things we often do not like, O God, are interruptions. We have our plans made for the day, calls to be made, customers to call, appointments to keep and then that interruption comes and everything come to a halt. We confess that often we are filled with resentment. We don’t like the demanding caller, the person who invades our privacy, the cell phone call at 2:00 A.M. in the morning, a family member asking for money, or a stranger who needs a hand-up. But maybe, just maybe, these interruptions are your way of getting to us in some round-about way, of confronting us with something or someone who needs immediate attention and we are the only one in the neighborhood. Forgive us for the times we have turned the stranger away, we were too busy to listen, we wouldn’t take the shirt off our back and give it to someone else or we said, “let someone else deal with it.” Forgive us. Restore us. Make us new people after the example of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

SILENT CONFESSION & DECLARATION OF PARDON

Leader:               In Jesus Christ a new life opens up. In him we are forgiven, give a new start and our feet are placed on the road called “discipleship.”

Community:      We never tire of the power of his cross to make new people, followers

                          in his image. Amen.

RESPONSE                                  “Change My Heart O God”

Change my heart, OGod; make it ever true. Change my heart, O God; may I be Like you. You are the Potter; I am the clay. Mold me and make me; this is what I pray. (repeat)

*CREED AND GLORIA PATRI                                                                          (No. 579)

We confess that the Holy Spirit helps believers grow in the new life in Christ. The Christian fellowship was not a society of perfect people. The struggle between the old way of life and the new was severe. Yet the Spirit produced among followers of Jesus love, joy, peace and victories in the battle against evil. We believe the Holy Spirit works today whenever believers grow toward maturity in Christ. As long as we live we struggle with sin, but the Spirit’s presence assures us God will complete what he has begun in us.                 A Declaration of Faith, 1977

NORTHMONT OFFERS a well-equipped nursery that is supervised by permanent staff. All worshippers are welcome to use the nursery for infants and preschoolers for all or a portion of each service. When exiting the front doors of the sanctuary, turn right.

WE GREET EACH OF YOU on this 13th Sunday in Pentecost. Our prayer is that you will find that faith and life are natural partners. Faith prepares us for living, and the way we live our life shapes our faith.

PLEASE BE CAREFUL as you leave the church at the light in front of the church. Last Sunday, church member Twila Weixel was involved in an auto accident at the light. She was taken to Passavant Hospital and released that evening. She is at home being tended to by her family.

THE STEWARDSHIP & FINANCE COMMITTEE IS SPONSORING A DINNER to discuss planned giving and Northmont’s endowment fund.  This dinner focuses on planned giving to the church and has its roots in the very important topic of will creation.  As many of you know, no responsible adult should be without a will, and as you are making your will you may want to consider the benefits that planned giving has to offer.  Many of you may also know that gifts deeded in the will and trusts of church members will allow them to give in perpetuity to the good of the church through the endowment fund as well as have potentially positive tax consequences. Phil Blake of the Pittsburgh Presbytery will be speaking to all willing (no pun intended) members of Northmont at 5:30 on Sunday September 10th at Chadwick’s in Wexford regarding the benefits of Planned Giving, including the tax incentives.  Dinner will be provided by Stewardship and Finance, and with no Steeler game on Sunday you have nothing to lose.  So come join the members of Stewardship and Finance at 5:30 on Sunday September 10th for feast, fellowship and facts regarding planned giving.  Please let us know of your intention to join us by calling the church office at 412-364-0105 no later than August 31st.

NORTHMONT BELLES begin on Friday, September 15th at 3:45 P.M. in the choir room. Come and ring your hearts out to God!

KIDS IN  GRADES 1-5!!!!!! Northmont  Kids of the Kingdom Program begins with a pizza supper  on Wednesday, September 20th at  5:30 P.M. in the Polley Fellowship Hall. Music, Bible stories, kitchen crafts, choirchimes, and exciting new boomwhackers are all part of the fun. We will begin to learn our new Christmas musical, “A Stable Fit for a King.” “What,” you may ask, “are Boomwhackers?”  Come and find out!  Our program ends at 7:00 P.M.  Northmont members and their friends are most welcome! Please bring a few dollars for pizza!
