Rally Day
WORSHIP SERVICE Sunday, September 10, 2006 8:30 & 11:00 A.M.
PRAYER TIME BEFORE WORSHIP: On this Rally Sunday, O God, we are making a shift to a new fall schedule. The summer is behind us, classes are well underway, vacation time is over, and we look forward to a fall season of new intensity of Christian growth and involvement in your work. We want today to be a homecoming in our church for everyone. May your blessing fall everywhere your people gather to do your work. Make us teachable, open, and ready to respond to your truth and love made known in Jesus Christ. Do a mighty work in us all and through your Church Universal. Amen.

PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP
CALL TO WORSHIP (Psalm 16)
Leader: Protect me, O God, for in you I take refuge.
Community: You are my Lord; I have no good apart from you.
Leader: I bless the Lord who gives me counsel.
Community: I keep the Lord always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.
Leader: My heart is glad, my soul rejoices, and I rest secure.
All: In your presence there is fullness of joy. You have blessed us with overflowing grace. We give ourselves to you with generous abandon.
*HYMN “Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty!” No. 138
*UNISON PRAYER OF ADORATION AND INVOCATION
Leader: The word of the Lord.
Community: Thanks be to God.

UNISON CONFESSION
Gracious and loving God, we read in scripture, “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing, it is the gift of God.” We confess that we sometimes hear those amazing words and they go right over our heads, and we go on living the Christian life like it’s all about us and what we do to earn your
favor and forgiveness. We live in a culture where the ethic of working hard is deeply ingrained in us all, and it’s difficult to hear words that speak of free grace and free pardon. Help each of us to receive your free and unmerited gift – life filled with forgiveness through the cross of your Son Jesus Christ. Amen.
SILENT CONFESSION & DECLARATION OF PARDON
Leader: The mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting. I declare in the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven.
Community: We are forgiven and at peace. Amen.
RESPONSE “Change My Heart O God”
Change my heart, O God; make it ever true. Change my heart, O God; may I be Like you. You are the Potter; I am the clay. Mold me and make me; this is what I pray. (repeat)
ANTHEM “For the Beauty of the Earth” arr. Pethel
Amanda Joos, flute
KIDS’ CORNER Dr. David B. Antonson After Kids Corner, Jan Wilson will be taking the children ages 4-9 to Steps of Faith)
*HYMN “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” No. 403
SERMON “Starting Over” Dr. David B. Antonson
*AFFIRMATION AND GLORIA PATRI (No. 579)
We believe all things will be renewed in Christ. In Christ God gave us a glimpse of the new creation he has already begun and will surely finish. We do not know when the final day will come. In our time we see only broken and scattered signs that the renewal of all things is underway. We do not yet see the end of cruelty and suffering

in the world, the church, or in our own lives. But we see Jesus as Lord. As he stands at the center of our history, we are confident he will stand at its end. He will judge all people and nations. Evil will be condemned and rooted out of God’s good creation. All things will be made new. A Declaration of Faith, 1977
