Renewal of Baptism Sunday
Sacrament of Baptism
2nd Sunday in Epiphany
WORSHIP SERVICE Sunday, January 14, 2007 8:30 & 11:00 A.M.
PRAYER TIME BEFORE WORSHIP: We recall as your people, O God, the day that your Son began his public ministry. It began with his baptism in the Jordan River by John the Baptist. We marvel that he asked to be baptized by John, and when it was over the heavens opened, the Holy Spirit as a dove descended on him, and a voice said to the crowd, “This is my beloved Son, chosen and marked by my love, pay attention to him.” Renew the baptism promises of us all this day, as we remember our own baptism and your claim on our life. Amen.
PRELUDE “Prelude and Fugue in G Major” J. S. Bach
“Flourish and Sarabande” G. Young
PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP
CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: As many of you were baptized into Christ,
Community: You have clothed yourselves with Christ.
Leader: There is no longer Jew or Greek,
Community: There is no longer slave or free,
Leader: There is no longer male or female,
Community: For all of us are one in Christ Jesus.
Leader: Having been baptized into Christ, we have been baptized into his death.
Community: We have been buried with him by baptism into death; so that …
Leader: Just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father,
All: So we too, might walk in newness of life.

CONFESSSION OF SIN – A LITANY
Leader: As water cleanses, purifies, refreshes and sustains the creation, so in Jesus
Christ you have called us to new obedience and a new life lived in him.
Community: But we confess we seek our own way, we forget our baptism and the
promises that were made.
Leader: You have called us to trust you completely, to turn away from all that is
evil and seek the new life made available in your Son.
Community: But we confess that we are often full of self, we seek our own good and
forget the new life available in Christ.
Leader: In the waters of baptism you confirm to us that we are buried with Christ
in his death, raised to share in his resurrection, and are being renewed by
the Holy Spirit.
Community: But we confess that we often fall short of your glory and promise.
Help us to put on Christ and be found in him.
Leader: Having passed through the waters of baptism, we would die to sin so that
we might come alive to God in Christ Jesus.
All: We have put on Christ, and would lead a life worthy of the calling to
which we have been called. Alleluia! Alleluia!

Words of invitation, questions to the parents and congregation
Unison Prayer: Ever faithful God, we give thanks that baptism is the sign and seal of our incorporation into Christ. In the water, we participate in Jesus’ Spirit and resurrection, and we rise to newness of life in Christ. Here the Holy Spirit binds us together with the saints who have gone before us and we are held in the faithfulness of God, adopted into the covenant family of the Church, and welcomed as Christ’s own. We pray that Ian Rothko Bottomley, Dylan Durant Showalter-Westwood and

Luke William Schott will grow strong in faith and become faithful disciples. We pray for their parents Richard and Sharon Bottomley, Michelle Showalter and Paul Westwood, and Eric and Jeannie Schott, and ask that you will give them wisdom and understanding in bringing up their children to know and serve Jesus Christ. Amen.

Jesu, joy of man’s desiring, Holy wisdom, Love most bright, Drawn by Thee our souls aspiring, soar to uncreated light. Word of God, our flesh that fashioned With the fire of life impassioned. Striving still to Truth unknown, soaring, dying round Thy throne Through the way where hope is guiding, hark, what peaceful music rings. Where the flock in thee confiding, Drink of joy from deathless springs. Theirs is beauty’s fairest pleasure, Theirs is wisdom’s holiest treasure. Thou dost ever lead Thine own, In the love of joys unknown.
