Third Sunday in Epiphany

WORSHIP SERVICE                Sunday, January 21, 2007                    8:30 & 11:00 A.M.

PRAYER TIME BEFORE WORSHIP: Gracious and loving God, our desire is that our worship this morning be Spirit-led and Your voice speaking to us. All week we have heard messages from the media and culture about what to buy and how to live a fulfilled life, but what we really want to hear is what You have to say to us. May the hymns of the morning, the prayers, the spoken word, the scripture readings, and the anthems challenge us, helping us to take a bold step of faith so that we can see this world and all our responsibilities from Your viewpoint. Through Jesus Christ. Amen.

PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP

CALL TO WORSHIP (Psalm 91)

Leader:               Where do we see God’s handiwork?

Community:      How clearly the sky reveals God’s glory! It shows what God has done.

Leader:               God makes a home in the sky for the sun – it comes out in the morning, like an athlete eager to run a race.

Community:      Looking to the heavens, no speech or words are used, you just see the glory of God before you.

Leader:               Where else do we come close to God?

Community:      The law of the Lord gives new strength, and gives wisdom to those who lack it.

All:                    In creation and in your law, O God, we see and hear you at work. May our words and our thoughts be acceptable to you, our refuge and redeemer!

UNISON CONFESSION

O God of light, we have just come through another Christmas. The carols still ring in our ears. We heard those words, “the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness – on them light has shined.” We freely admit that our lives are a mix of light and darkness. There are times when your light lit up our life and the way ahead was clear, and the Light that is Jesus Christ shone through us for all to see. But there have been other times when our dark side was seen, felt and heard. Those closest to us have sometimes found us hard to live with, doubt reigned unchecked and we could only see the worst in others. O God, who came to bring the light of your son Jesus Christ into all the world, so that our lives would be filled with light, forgive us when we have not been a light to others. Erase the darkness in us, expose the gloom and drive away the shadows so that our whole lives might be filled with your light, through Jesus Christ. Amen.

SILENT CONFESSION AND DECLARATION OF PARDON

Leader:               You have been raised with Christ, thus seek the things that are above. Set

your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. You

have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. Live the new life,

                          forgiven and set free.

Community:      In Jesus Christ our lives are made new, we no longer have to be slaves

to sin but followers of righteousness. Amen.
