Scout Sunday
WORSHIP SERVICE Sunday, February 11, 2007 8:30 & 11:00 A.M.
PRAYER TIME BEFORE WORSHIP: O God who has worked wonders and surprises, we gather together to celebrate your mighty acts. Not only did you have a hand in bringing this world into being, but you reached out to us in countless ways. You sent us to Abraham and Sarah, and through Moses the law and the commandments, and finally you sent us your own Son, Jesus Christ. We give thanks for the precious gift of prayer, for the young men of our scout troops and their families, and all the ways you touch our lives. Come and do a mighty work in us all, through Jesus Christ. Amen.
PRELUDE “The God of Abraham Praise” arr. Burkhardt
“Canon in D” Pachelbel

PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP
CALL TO WORSHIP (Psalm 27)
Leader: The Lord is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear?
Community: Your face, Lord, do I seek.
Leader: The Lord is the stronghold of my life, of whom shall I be afraid?
Community: Your face, Lord, do I seek.
Leader: One thing have I asked of the Lord…and that is behold the beauty of the Lord, and inquire in his temple.
Community: Your face, Lord, do I seek.
Leader: I will sing and make melody to the Lord. Hear me O Lord, and answer me!
All: Your face, Lord do I seek all my days. Draw near to me and I will be satisfied.
*PROCESSING HYMN “Open Now Thy Gates of Beauty” No. 489
(processing of the flags) Steven Stroyne, Ryan Sanguigni, Andy Goehring
*PRAYER OF ADORATION AND INVOCATION
FIRST SCRIPTURE READING Andy Hickly
Psalm 1 (O.T. Page 489)
Leader: The word of the Lord.
Community: Thanks be to God.
UNISON CONFESSION
Forgiving and restoring God, who makes people new again in Jesus Christ, we come asking your forgiveness.
If we can recall a time when we loved you more, restore.
If we become good friends with some favorite sin, rebuke.
If the flame of our commitment to the world’s awful need flickers dimly,
rekindle.
If along the way a relationship once cherished stands endangered through some
wrong, real or imagined, reunite.
If some addiction has us in its grips, by some intervention, release us.
If our hearts have grown hard and inaccessible, mold and reshape us.
If we have become cynical and bitter, open us to new possibilities again.
Show us the relevance of Christ for the life we live within and the world we make for others, that we may no longer live to ourselves, but unto Him whom we call Savior, Lord and Friend. Amen.
SILENT CONFESSION & DECLARATION OF PARDON
Leader: There is healing for our hurts, light for our darkness and pardon for our
sins. All this is made possible in Jesus Christ our Lord.
Community: May the God of new beginnings set our feet on a new path, living a
new way, seeing ourselves and our world with new eyes. Amen.

SERMON “Like a Tree, Planted” Rev. Dr. Jerome Creach
*CREED AND GLORIA PATRI No. 579
In life and in death we belong to God. Through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit, we trust in the one triune God, the Holy One of Israel, whom alone we worship and serve. We trust in Jesus Christ, fully human, fully God. Jesus proclaimed the reign of God: preaching good news to the poor and release to the captives, teaching by word and deed and blessing the children, healing the sick and binding up the brokenhearted, eating with outcasts, forgiving sinners, and calling all to repent and believe in the gospel.

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 21ST IS ASH WEDNESDAY. This is the beginning of the season of Lent, when we observe the 40 days of Jesus in the wilderness. The culmination of Lent is Holy Week, (Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday). This year, we will be observing Ash Wednesday with a Healing and Wholeness service at 7:00 P.M. in the sanctuary of Northmont. There will not be a dinner this evening, as in years past, however Kids of the Kingdom will meet this evening with pizza supper at 5:30 P.M. (and as erroneously mentioned in this month’s Piper). We will prepare for Lent by offering the opportunity to come forward with our prayer requests and receive anointing oil on the forehead if so desired. Our Stephen Ministers will be here to pray with us. Also, Lenten devotional prayers entitled “Questions Along the Way” from our Worship Committee will be distributed. The Chancel Choir will sing, Nancy Garver, head of the Stephen Ministry program, our seminary student, Chris Brown, and youth director Sean Kelly will assist. Come one and all, and let’s begin the Lenten season on a spiritual note!
THE MEALS ON WHEELS in West View and Gwen Spahr thank everyone that baked desserts in January for this very important program. It is greatly appreciated.
NEWLY WEDS! The wedding is over, the thank you notes have been sent and you’re starting to learn to adjust to life together. Sharing a room, a bathroom sink, a television set…balancing menus, schedules and checkbooks. As you adjust to your new life, a Stephen Minister can provide a little extra support.
PRODUCT OF THE MONTH FOR NORTH HILLS FOOD BANK: Month of February – Canned Fruit. All items are very much appreciated, especially monetary donations. Checks should be made out to Northmont U. P. Church – memo-North Hills Food Bank.
