WORSHIP SERVICE Sunday, February 18, 2007 8:30 & 11:00 A.M.
PRAYER TIME BEFORE WORSHIP: You, O God, are both the joy of heaven and the hope of earth. Your goodness never fails. As we now center ourselves in you, bless us with a sense of your overflowing grace. Fulfill in each of us longings and needs that are often too personal to share with others. Thank you for health and length of days, for friends who always seem to appear at the right moment, for times of prayerful intimacy with You and for a Christ who both comforts and confronts. May we praise you now as we ought, through Jesus Christ. Amen.
PRELUDE “Andante” Rheinberger

PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP
CALL TO WORSHIP (Psalm 42)
Leader: As a deer longs for flowing streams to drink,
Community: So my soul longs for you, God.
Leader: My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.
Community: My soul longs for you O God, only you satisfy.
Leader: I pour out my soul to God, who hears my every need.
Community: My soul longs for you; O God, my help and my God.
Leader: God’s steadfast love is with me during the day, and at night his song fills my heart.
All: My soul longs for you, O God. I will hope in You. You sustain me in every situation.

UNISON CONFESSION
O God, whose mercy and forgiveness renews us, setting our feet on the right path again and putting our hearts in tune with you, we are bold to confess our sin. Forgive us for everything that runs counter to your love that is not part of your design for us, that breaks your heart and blurs your image in us.
May Jesus’ lowliness curb our status-seeking,
His humility melt away our pride,
His purity condemn our lust,
His love for people shame the love we waste on things,
His sense of mission challenge our aimlessness,
His forgiving spirit erase the grudges and pain we harbor.
Make us new people after the image of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
SILENT CONFESSION & DECLARATION OF PARDON
Leader: Our sins are too heavy to carry, too real to hide, and too deep to undo.
Thanks be to God that Jesus has made atonement on our behalf.
Community: A whole new world has opened up. In him we are forgiven.

SERMON “What in the World Is God Doing?” Rev. Dr. Donald Dawson
*CREED AND GLORIA PATRI No. 579
We believe that one day, all things will be renewed in Christ. In Christ, God gave us a glimpse of the new creation he has already begun and will surely finish. We do not know when the final day will come. In our time we see only broken and scattered signs that the renewal of all things is under way. We do not yet see the end of cruelty and suffering, pain and illness in the world, the church or our own lives. But we see Jesus as Lord. As he stands at the center of our history, we are confident he will stand at its end. He will judge all people and nations. Evil will be condemned and rooted out of God’s good creation. There will be no more tears or pain. All things will be made new. (A Declaration of Pardon, 1977)

THIS COMING WEDNESDAY, February 21st is Ash Wednesday. This is the beginning of the season of Lent, when we observe the 40 days of Jesus in the wilderness. The culmination of Lent is Holy Week, (Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday). This year, we will be observing Ash Wednesday with a Healing and Wholeness service at 7:00 P.M. in the sanctuary of Northmont. There will not be a dinner this evening, as in years past, (and as erroneously mentioned in this month’s Piper). Kids of the Kingdom will have their usual pizza supper at 5:30 P.M. We will prepare for Lent by offering the opportunity to come forward with our prayer requests and receive anointing oil on the forehead if so desired. Our Stephen Ministers will be here to pray with us. Also, Lenten devotional prayers entitled “Questions Along the Way” from our Worship Committee will be distributed. The Chancel Choir will sing, Nancy Garver, head of Stephen Ministry, our seminary student, Chris Brown, and youth director Sean Kelly will assist. Come one and all, and let’s begin the Lenten season on a spiritual note!

In order to ensure there are plenty of selections for everyone to share, please plan on bringing enough to feed twelve according to the following: Last names beginning with A - G bring a dessert; H - M bring a salad or side dish; and N - Z please bring main dishes to share. Also remember that our kitchen is not yet functional so all dishes must arrive ready to go! Please bring your own table service as well. Lemonade will be provided. The evening should conclude by 7:15 pm.
THE KIDS OF THE KINGDOM have some interesting things going on. On Wednesday, February 28th, we will have a pot luck dinner and talent show, (see related article above).
