Third Sunday in Lent
WORSHIP SERVICE Sunday, March 11, 2007 8:30 & 11:00 A.M.
PRAYER TIME BEFORE WORSHIP: We want to say “yes” this morning O God, to you. We say “yes” that you are the Lover who wants to be loved. We say “yes” to your question to us “do you love me?” We say “yes” to your truth, to the spiritual life, to Christ within us. We say “yes” to praying and playing, becoming ill and being healed, to living and dying. We say “yes” to the spirit who wants to use Lent for our further development in Christ. We say “yes” to all that you want to do in us today. Amen.
PRELUDE “Jesus, My Life’s Light” J. S. Bach
“When I Survey the Wondrous Cross” arr. Burkhardt
*****
A WORD FROM OUR PASTOR NOMINATING COMMITTEE (PNC)
(8:30) Karen Reckless (11:00) Sylvia Campbell
PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP
CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: God gives all who need a fresh word to come. Come now with the burdens of work, home and community. Jesus says to each of us,
Community: Repent – turn around, the kingdom of God is at hand.
Leader: God invites everyone, all ages, wherever we are on the journey of life, to come. Jesus says to each of us,
Community: Repent – turn around, the kingdom of God is at hand.
Leader: God invites us to lay aside our lesser gods to embrace the God that we have come to know in Jesus Christ. Jesus says to each of us,
All: Repent – turn around, the kingdom of God is at hand. We would live in the fullness of that kingdom.
*PROCESSING HYMN “Lord, Who Throughout These Forty Days” No. 81
*PRAYER OF ADORATION AND INVOCATION

FIRST SCRIPTURE READING Isaiah 55:1-9 (O.T. Page 685)
Leader: The word of the Lord.
Community: Thanks be to God.
UNISON CONFESSION
The fact that we are always searching for you, O God, always struggling to discover the fullness of Love, always yearning for the complete truth, tells us that we have already been given a taste of You. We confess that we can only look for something that we have, to some degree, already found. How can we search for beauty and truth unless that beauty and truth are already known to us in the depth of our hearts? We all have inner memories of the innocence that we have lost. We were innocent before we started feeling guilty. We were in the light before we entered the darkness. We were at home before we started to search for a home. Deep in the recesses of our minds and hearts lies hidden the treasure we seek. We know it’s precious, and we know that it holds the gift we most desire: a life that is stronger than death. Lead us again this Lent to behold the Christ whose life overcame death, sin and the evil one for us. Amen.
SILENT CONFESSION & DECLARATION OF PARDON
Leader: Hear the good news! The saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance,
that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. The righteous One
died for the unrighteous that he might lead us to God.
Community: In the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Amen.

*CREED AND GLORIA PATRI No. 579
We believe that the Holy Spirit gives us courage to pray without ceasing, to witness among all peoples to Christ as Lord and Savior, to unmask idolatries in church and culture. The Spirit helps us to hear the voices of peoples long silenced and to work with others for justice, freedom and peace. In gratitude to God, empowered by the Spirit, we strive to serve Christ in our daily lives, even as we watch for God’s new heaven and new earth, praying, “Come, Lord Jesus!” With believers in every time and place, we rejoice that nothing in life or in death can separate us from the love of God, in Christ Jesus our Lord. THE PASTOR’S STUDY NEEDS YOUR HELP! The study is in need of a few items before Rev. Ewing begins working here at Northmont. These items include: a small round meeting table to be used with the chairs already in the office, two table lamps, a desk lamp and a small table that would be appropriate to house his coffee maker and coffee supplies. When you are preparing for the flea market perhaps you may have some of these gently used items that you would be willing to donate to our Interim Pastor’s office. Please place your donations in the Director of Family Ministries office by Monday, March 19th. Your donations are greatly appreciated!
Any items that are donated and not used will be given to the flea market to sell.
THE SESSION OF NORTHMONT on Feb. 20 chose to support a fundraiser for Katie Rodack, a 13 year old girl battling brain cancer. She is the sister-in-law of Emily Stanton Rodack who is a member of Northmont as well as the Youth Director of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church. Thrivent Financial services has pledged to match donations up to $5,000. Please send donations to: St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Rodack Family Fundraiser, 920 Perry Hwy, Pittsburgh, PA 15229.
THE KNITTING GROUP OF NORTHMONT would like to say “Thank You” to everyone who has donated all the beautiful yarn to us. These donations make it possible for us to continue our work for people in need. The hats, mittens, scarves and sweaters that help to keep these people comfortable are the end results of your generosity.
GOOD NEWS! And so many plans to make. A new crib? What about continuing to work? And how much will our insurance cover when the baby is born? In this happy, yet stressful time, you may need extra caring support. A Stephen Minister can provide a listening ear while your life is changing so greatly.
THE SEARCH COMMITTEE for Director of Family Ministries and Contemporary
Worship continues to meet on a regular basis. We are currently reviewing resumes
and will soon be interviewing candidates. If you know of anyone who may be
interested in this position contact any of the members of the search committee
or access the church website for details. The members of the search committee
are Bill Baierl, Vicky Dellaquila, Nancy Garver, Bart Roberts, and
Bruce Sardon. Please remember that this search committee is for Director of Family
Ministries and Contemporary Worship, NOT the Pastoral Search Committee.
NORTHSIDE COMMON MINISTRIES are in need of empty clean egg cartons that hold a dozen eggs. Please place your donated empty egg cartons in the Library. Your contributions are greatly appreciated!
PASTOR NOMINATING COMMITTEE (PNC) needs your help! In order to help assess the direction that the congregation seeks to take Northmont and the characteristics that will be key in our new pastor, we would like every Northmont member to take the Church Assessment Tool ("CAT") survey. Every confirmed church member should go online to www.northmontchurch.org/cat and take the survey (once) between now and Sunday March 25, 2007. Please pick up your survey packet at the back of the church after services. This packet contains more information about the survey and a paper copy of the survey for the infirmed and those who cannot get Internet access. If at all physically possible, we want everyone to take the survey online. So if you do not have Internet access at home, then please take the survey at a friend's or family member's house, at Northland Public Library (or other library with Internet access), or in the Christian Education computer room at Northmont from 9:30-11:00 am between services on either Sunday March 4 or Sunday March 11. At these times, PNC members will man the computers and help answer questions in the Christian Education computer room which is located last room on the right in the day care center wing on the basement floor. For the infirmed and those who cannot get Internet access, mailing directions are provided in the packet and a drop box is also available outside the church office to return paper surveys. At the end of the survey period, PNC will summarize the results of the survey to the congregation. We want every Northmont member to take the survey. Thank you in advance for your help and input! Your PNC members are Bill Baierl, Sylvia Campbell, Jean Eckert, Andy Fraley, Bob Koehler, Jessica Molnar, Karen Reckless, Leonard Stewart, Christy Wenger. Feel free to contact any PNC member with questions about the survey (please do not ask office staff for help with the Internet survey) or about the search process. Thank you!
