Fifth Sunday in Lent
WORSHIP SERVICE Sunday, March 25, 2007 8:30 & 11:00 A.M.
PRAYER TIME BEFORE WORSHIP: As we approach ever closer to the sacred ground of Holy Week, O God, show us how we can more fully enter the true meaning of this season of Lent. Help us to hear your Son saying, “I am going to Jerusalem, and there I will be arrested, killed and raised on the third day.” Help us to hear your Son talk about greatness, when he says, “Whoever wants to be first must be last of all, and servant to all.” Help us to hear your Son ask the painful question, “Who do people say that I am?” Count us in the number of those who can say, “You are the one sent from God to redeem the world.” Amen.
PRELUDE “Forty Days and Forty Nights” arr. McCabe
“Jesus, I Will Ponder Now” arr. Manz

A WORD FROM OUR PASTOR NOMINATING COMMITTEE (PNC)
(8:30) Andy Fraley (11:00) Karen Reckless
PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP
CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his steadfast love endures forever.
Community: Those whom God has rescued, let them say so.
Leader: To the hungry and thirsty, those lost and unable to find their way,
Community: Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love, God satisfies the thirsty; the hungry he fills with good things.
Leader: To those wandering in the darkness, lost and forgotten,
Community: Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love. God brings people out of darkness and breaks their bonds.
All: The steadfast love of the Lord never comes to an end. God forgets his people. God is now beside us, calling forth our praise and songs of joy.

FIRST SCRIPTURE READING Psalm 103:1-12 (O.T. Page 554)
Leader: The word of the Lord.
Community: Thanks be to God.
UNISON CONFESSION
We frankly admit, O God, that one of our greatest difficulties with forgiveness is holding onto anger, resentment, and bitterness. We say we forgive someone for what they may have said or done to us, but it’s hard to let go of the pain that goes with it. And we know what that can do to us. Holding onto anger and resentment can be like poison in our system, a festering wound that doesn’t heal. Our prayer this morning is that as you forgive us and we forgive others, we may be able to let go of the emotions that were part of it all. Drain from us any vindictiveness, any desire to get even, any desire to see ill come to someone else and help us to live in the joy and freedom you provide.
SILENT CONFESSION & DECLARATION OF PARDON
Leader: Jesus Christ was sent by the Father, the one who knew no sin, so that he
might rescue and save the lost.
Community: We rejoice that God’s forgiveness frees and saves us. Give us a new
heart and mind, a new outlook, a new way of looking at the world
and others. Restore to us the joy of your salvation. Amen.

SERMON “A Mind Like Christ’s” The Rev. James Craig
*CREED AND GLORIA PATRI No. 579
We believe that Jesus died for sinners. Religious leaders hated Jesus because he criticized their hypocrisy, and exposed their neglect of justice and mercy. They charged him with blasphemy and sedition, when he claimed to speak and act with God’s authority. One of Jesus’ followers betrayed him. Others abandoned and denied him, because they were afraid to stand with him, because he provoked unrest among people. He was sentenced, mocked, beaten, and crucified as a common criminal. We confess…that in the presence of Jesus, who lived out what God wants us all to be, we were threatened beyond endurance. Blinded by our rebellion against our Creator, we killed his Son when we met him face to face. In this event, God achieved and demonstrated once for all, the costly forgiveness of our sins. A Declaration of Faith, 1977

OFFERTORY ANTHEM (8:30) “Thy Perfect Love” Scott
Leah Ehrhardt, alto
(11:00) “My Lord, My Love” Tallis/Stephens
Leah Ehrhardt, alto, Leslie Scheuer, soprano
My Lord, my Love, was crucified: He all the pains did bear: But in the sweetness of His rest, he makes His servants share. How sweetly rest thy saints above which in Thy bosom lie! The Church below doth rest in hope of that felicity. Thou, Lord, who daily feed’st thy sheep, makest them a weekly feast; Thy flocks meet in their several folds upon this day of rest: Welcome and dear unto my soul are those sweet feasts of love: but what a Sabbath shall I keep when I shall rest above! I bless Thy wise and wondrous love, which binds us to be free: Which makes us leave our earthly snares, that we may come to Thee: I come, I wait, I hear, I pray: they footsteps Lord I trace; I sing to think this is the way unto my Savior’s face! Amen.
