PRAYER TIME BEFORE WORSHIP Lord, send the gift of your Spirit to fill this place and myself and the world with truth that burns like fire, with beauty that moves me like the wind; and set me free, Lord, free to try new ways of living, free to forgive myself and others, free to join the battle for justice and peace, free to rejoice as a child of your Spirit. Amen
PRELUDE “Come, Holy Spirit, God and Lord” J. S. Bach
“We Pray to the Holy Spirit” Buxtehude
WELCOME, CONCERNS, AND GREETINGS
Moment for the Birthday Offering Jan Baty
PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP
*CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: In the last days it shall come to pass God’s Spirit is poured out on all
Flesh;
Community: Sons and daughters shall prophesy, young men shall see visions
and old men shall dream dreams;
Leader: On the captives, both men and women, God’s spirit will be poured out
and they shall prophesy.
Community: Let us call upon the name of the Lord, who alone has given us
salvation.
*OPENING HYMN “On Pentecost They Gathered” No. 128
*PRAYER OF CELEBRATION (unison)
Lord of Spirit and truth, we are together in one place, believing in God’s love because of Jesus, and needing again the resources to live our lives well. Make us sensitive to your presence within us; give us the ability to discern your activity in the world; enable us to not only say but to do good, through the One who is Good, Jesus Christ. Amen
*CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE [verse 4 of the first hymn]
PRAYER OF CONFESSION (unison)
Almighty God, you poured your Spirit upon gathered disciples creating bold tongues, open ears, and a new community of faith. We confess that we hold back the force of your Spirit among us. We do not listen for your word of grace, nor do we speak the good news of your love. Have mercy upon us, O God. Transform our timid lives by the power of your Spirit, and fill us with a

burning desire to be your faithful people. In Jesus name.
[Moment of silent confession]
ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: Spirit of God, powerful and unpredictable as the wind, come upon us as
we pray and become the driving force in our lives.
Community: Forgive us and release us for worship and service in Jesus’
name. In Christ we are forgiven and sent to serve.
FIRST SCRIPTURE READING Genesis 11:1-9 (O.T. Page 9)
Leader: The word of the Lord.
Community: Thanks be to God.

SERMON “Practicing Pentecost” Christopher Brown, Seminary Intern
*CREED AND GLORIA PATRI No. 579
The same Spirit who inspired the prophets and apostles rules our faith and life in Christ through Scripture, engages us through the Word proclaimed, claims us in the waters of baptism, feeds us with the bread of life and the cup of salvation, and calls women and men to all ministries of the Church. In a broken and fearful world the Spirit gives us courage to pray without ceasing, to witness among all peoples to Christ as Lord and Savior, to unmask idolatries in Church and culture, to hear the voices of peoples long silenced, and to work with others for justice, freedom, and peace. In gratitude to God, empowered by the Spirit, we strive to serve Christ in our daily tasks and to live holy and joyful lives, even as we watch for God's new heaven and new earth, praying, "Come, Lord Jesus!" Amen.
